These tamarisk trees were growing on a beach on the island of Chios, Greece.  Their graceful shapes and the complex colours of their trunks and of the shadows thrown onto the beach were simply crying out to be painted.  The bright Greek island light was bouncing off the sea and the pebbles on the beach throwing the tree trunks into stark relief.
