Kardamyla is a small fishing village on the Greek island of Chios.  The old boat was laid up in this patch of waste ground, quietly decomposing as the vegetation grew up around it. And, yes, the sea really was that dark at the horizon that day...."the wine dark sea" of Greek antiquity is still there in the right weather conditions.
